Trunks isn't even as strong as Black, that was a poorly writen plot armor. They just needed him to defeat Black, in terms or actual power (and teamwork) they would always lose and get so easily killed, it's not even funny.

They were being raped from the start and after some ass pull they managed to beat both and don't even get me started on the very end ... without Zen-oh there they would've been certainly wiped out in an instant.
