I believe this was said during Buu saga ..
When Goku was teaching the kids about the fusion. I think he said something about equal size and amount of ki released.You can regulate your Ki but not your height.
Akira is an air head so I wouldn't be surprised if this was another major plot hole ... it's his thing, creating plot holes e.e'' -
But it doesn't mean, that it can't happen
Logical solution would be Goku press easy button by accident :P.
