Whenever I boot the launcher in an attempt to allow it to install the patch for the update, so I can play, it doesn't download anything and says the server status is an error.
I just freshly downloaded a new installation of the launcher today, and I've since restarted my computer at least once.

That usually means you're having some kind of connectivity issue to the website, where the launcher gets its news. It's mostly harmless though, if you leave the launcher for a couple of minutes it will timeout and you can hit the start button. Alternately, you can click the ignore patch checkbox in the launcher's settings menu to get around that, but you won't automatically download patches while that's checked.
