Sudden permanent FPS drop after latest update

  • Anyone else notice a sudden sharp drop in FPS? Started last week after launcher downloaded an updated.

I was playing pretty well a month ago but now animation is like 15 fps from the moment I chose a character. Currently in the HQ Ruins area so there are a lot of enemies, but again this was not an issue a month ago when I was there with a different character.

I've tried adjusting all the settings to the lowest value it is make a very "marginal" difference for how much video quality I have to give up (and these higher settings were fine prior)

    Processor 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700KF 3.60 GHz

Installed RAM 64.0 GB (63.8 GB usable)

    Edition Windows 11 Home

    Version 23H2

    OS build 22631.3737

GPU processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080

    Driver version: 556.12

Dedicated video memory: 10240 MB GDDR6X

    System video memory: 0 MB

  • Hey shadow2stealth,

The fps drop is likely due to the sight range change we pushed a week or so ago. This is one of the changes we're making in preparation for the new client. You shouldn't be getting 15 fps with those specs though. Can you upload a video to youtube unlisted and show me the link?

Had trouble getting the Win11 Gamebar FPS overlay to be displayed in video but should be very obvious the FPS difference.

At character selection getting a good 60-90 fps...once loaded into level it crashes down to 13-20 fps.

  • I wouldn't say it is "map" specific but definitely most affected in that "region" due to NPC/PC density. Basis for this is because warping to Korin's Village causes a fps drop to ~20 fps while it loads in everyone else's characters & village NPCs but will eventually jump back up to ~60 fps once all loading/drawing is complete...same with starter village area.

If I fly around both those maps (only have 2 visited so far), I suddenly notice a 33-50% fps drop (from ~60 down to 30-40 fps) as I point myself towards the north-west of Korin's Forest map. If I look away back towards center of Korin's Forest, fps dramatically shoots back up. Fighting near Ruin HQ entrance but still in Korin's Forest map seems to hold fps around 40. Upon first entering Ruins map, fps is still ~30-40 but once one travels to center fps plummets...likely due to the sheer number of enemies around the character (even though I can't visibly seen them via line of sight, the system seems to still be processing them thus hugely draining performance)

So is definitely something about that area (...again I'm thinking enemy density combined with possible sight range changes you mentioned) that affects both maps...Ruins HQ way more than other areas.

  • I may lower the range a bit in Red Ribbon ruins, we'll look into it. For the overworld I don't think we can do much, you'd get the sharp fps drops regardless as things spawn in. They were just sharper before because you saw the actual pop in. In the new client we'll be able to further optimize it!

    • Driver Updates: Sometimes, new game updates can conflict with outdated graphics card drivers. Head to the website of your graphics card manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and download and install the latest drivers for your specific model.
    • Windows Updates: Occasionally, conflicting Windows updates can affect performance. Check for any recent Windows updates you might have missed, and consider temporarily rolling back to a previous version if the issue started right after an update (consult Microsoft support for instructions on rollback procedures).
  • Cermia appreciate the attempt. but this goes way beyond "basic" troubleshooting. It was clearly a change on the server/client side was catalyst of this as my system worked fine up to the recent update and as indicated by my Nvidia specs, I'm on the latest drivers already (at time of the post).

    Verdant himself even admitted:

Understood. Just wanted to make sure this was known and to confirm I wasn't imagining things. You know how it is...players go "something changed" yet usually the dev response is "nothing changed on our side" so it was appreciated to get validation I didn't go crazy; honesty much appreciated.

The drop in the overworld isn't gameplay breaking (and I only really noticed once I had the fps counter going) since it at least stays 30 fps or higher & I was used to the occasional micro-stutter anyways...the ruins were definitely more "game breaking" as 15-20 fps is almost slideshow in game world so any thing you can do is 100% appreciated.
