how do you get the white things for upgrading gear?
Either Auction House or Cash Shop (donation).

Hmm...are there any particularly good areas where you can farm gear to use for crafting instead of paying extra zeni to buy it in addition to crafting it? Like, say, I want to farm equipment that gives me material for level 10 recipes so where would you recommend farming it?

Go to west city for lv 10 recipes and then shift + left click on recipes to preview it
if it didn't then it is not for your race/class. -
Crafting is a cool thing, but I think it isn't that effective now.
I think there should be some new gear
That would be nice to have (like actual good lvl 40-70 gear for every class) -

Anyone know where to get the Recipes for Capsule Containers (Bags, backpacks)?
because when disassembling materials, I keep seeing the Container/Bags popping up, but I don't know where to find the recipe.

Guys! For those having problems with crafting, download the latest english patch by GokUsama, it has a few if not all crafting recepies translated, it will help you alot. Translation Update Thread (English)
And remember, once you patch the game, DO NOT run the game's launcher, go inside the game folder and make a shortcut on your desktop of the dbog.exe and always enter the game via said application, otherwise the patch WILL NOT work, and it's not GokUsama's fault, it's a problem with the launcher that has been around for awhile. Peace out.
